- art though the years -
Speaking to my sweetheart I said, “Wouldn’t you just love oil paintings for our new house? The yes answer started a ball rolling that just keeps rolling over all the many years. Checking the Art stores, I couldn’t afford to buy paintings, so I said, “I’ll just pant my own.” Back in 1979 with three primary colors plus black and white the first of my paintings was underway resulting in ‘Mill Brook’ as following . . .
Two years of painting in the early day study with Morise Easter of Nashua, NH and later with lessons in Paris with artist Edwige, helped to enhance my organization and technique over the time. Many visits to the Paris art museums over the years are a great lesson as well.
The following is a photo of a painting from the Paris studies. It is a scene of a Street leading to the Sacre Coeur church as an example of the that effort.
I soon moved along with additional painting lessons and lots of practice. Sometimes I would paint realism on location, such as during our beach vacations on the coast of New England. A place on the shore road where a bubbling brook went down into the ocean by a small, picturesque cabin was the location for an onsite painting. Placing other paintings leaning against the car with price tags, sold well enough to nearly pay for the vacation for the whole week!
Many visits to the Paris art museums over the years are a great lesson as well. Along with some onsite work, I might make up my own composition, but with lessons I would make up my own configurations, eventually developing into what I call Composed Realism. This is a process of taking one primary scene and realistically inserting other scene elements into the overall scene. ‘Eiffel Lights’ shown below is a classic example. The basic scene with the tower and sunset were the primary scene, and is a common occurrence at the right time of the year. The composition part was first to slide the tower and building a little to the left to enhance the bridge over the River Seine. A boat from another photograph was composed on the on the river, the lady walking alone the paved embankment along with an artist painting the tower, and people in front of the little ground floor store were composed into the scene.
Composed Realism adds depth perspective and interest to the painting. With my composing method, the closer you look at the painting the more detail you will see. Please contact me for questions, purchase, or for a custom painting . . .
